One last thing needed before I can call these winding sticks done is adding the center marks. Winding sticks need to be centered on the piece they are measuring in order to be accurate. They also need to be placed in line with each other.
To aid this, I add small dowels on the face of each stick. I measure out the center and drill a 3/8″ hole about half way in. I then take a scrap piece of Walnut and begin pairing away the corners until it’s round enough to fit in the hole. Once fitted, it’s glued and tapped into place.
Once everything has dried, I cut away all pieces proud of the surface. I then take light passes with the hand plane to get all surfaces flush and smooth. I make sure to keep both sticks the same size during this process. That’s it, sticks are done. At this point Danish oil or any other finish could be applied.
