Winding Sticks: Part 1

One of the first things about using hand tools only is learning how to dimension lumber. This includes getting it straight, flat, and to the correct thickness. One of the first tools I made for myself were windings sticks. These are used to exaggerate the amount of twist in a board so you know which areas to plane down.

I started with some 3/4″ Maple scrap. You’ll need two pieces, each about 22″-24″ long and about 1.5″-2″ wide. Most of these measurements are preference, but just don’t make them too short. I also chose a couple of small pieces of 1/4″ thick Walnut scrap for one of the sticks to use for sighting. I’ll explain more about that later.

As with most things I make, I like simple. This is a shop project so they don’t have to be perfect or pretty, but it does give you a chance to practice techniques so use this time well. There’s no shame in making mistakes, it’s the only way we learn. The only critical aspect to these is that they are straight and lengths are parallel. Don’t rush this part because these will be used to dimension stock for all projects from here out so take your time and get it right.

To be continued…
